THE TPAAA

The Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association was formed in 1881 to promote fitness and camaraderie among Members of the Toronto Police Service and other First Responders.

Members of the Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association work in the community in support of the Toronto Police Service community enrichment initiatives. For over 75 years, the Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association has hosted the annual Playground Games for the youth of the city and also the annual Police Games. Currently, the Games play an important role in bridging relationships between at risk communities and the police through sports.

THE EXECUTIVE

Mustafa Popalzai, President

Mustafa joined the TPAAA Executive team as a “Secretary” several years ago after serving as the Cricket sports chair. Mustafa is an avid sports lover and plays Cricket, Basketball, Soccer and enjoys Bodybuilding.

Mustafa joined the TPAAA right from the Police College as a Cadet. He has travelled to England (3 times), Barbados, Pakistan, South Africa and the United States (5 times) with the Toronto Police Cricket team. Mustafa has also travelled across Ontario with the Police Basketball team playing in tournaments.

Mustafa works out of 51 Division and is currently assigned as a Neighborhood Community Officer (NCO) in Regent Park.

Mustafa is passionate about serving the members of the TPAAA and believes that a Police Sports Association is a must in every Police service to promote a healthy lifestyle and camaraderie among sworn and civilian members.

Farzad Ghotbi, 1st Vice President

Farzad is truly honored to be a part of the TPAAA executive team and he is excited to represent his team and the members the best way he can.  He always had a passion for health and fitness and has always lead by example.  If it wasn’t for going to the gym and following a healthy lifestyle, Farzad would not be where he is today.  He is here today to champion those who want to be a better version of themselves by way of mind, body and soul.

– Been a gym rep for 51 since 2004

– Site rep for 51 since 2014

– TPAAA member

– Fit Pin Appraiser

– 2 Gold winner of WPFG in 2017 (won my weight class and the overall for bodybuilding)

– Art Key Award in 2017

-TPS wellness ambassador and I assist members of 51 division with their health and wellness goals

-Won Canadian Nationals Bodybuilding in 2017 for mixed pair bodybuilding and masters bodybuilding

-Won Canadian National Pro Qualifier in 2022 in Classic Physique and in the overalls and received my IFBB PRO card ( International Federation of Bodybuilding Professional Athlete Status) .

-National level bodybuilding and fitness judge

-Currently working as an NCO in 51 Division

-Been a member of TPS since 2002

Fabio Caringi, Director of Athletics

Fabio Caringi has been a dedicated member of the TPAAA for 20 years and prior to starting his journey on the executive, he has served as a Sports Chair for the past 13 years. Currently holding the position of Treasurer, Fabio brings a wealth of experience and commitment to the association.

A lifelong sports enthusiast, Fabio has competed at high levels in multiple sports, including soccer, ball hockey, basketball, and track and field. His passion for athletics continues to drive his involvement in the TPAAA, where he remains dedicated to supporting members and promoting sports within the service.

Fabio is currently a Shift Supervisor in the Court Services Unit and continues to take great pride in serving both the members of the service and the community.

Jeff Dymond, Treasurer

Jeff Dymond is currently serving the TPAAA Executive as the new Treasurer. Jeff served as our Rugby Sports Chair.

Don Theriault, Secretary

My career with the Toronto Police Service provided me with numerous opportunities to lead, mentor, and inspire both colleagues and community members. I am proud to have contributed to the development athletic events that fostered engagement and teamwork across the city. These experiences reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of creating positive, lasting impacts within our communities.

As Secretary of the Toronto Police Amateur Athletic Association (TPAAA), I am committed to upholding the values of integrity, inclusivity, and excellence. I strive to ensure that every member feels supported and empowered to pursue their athletic aspirations. My leadership is rooted in transparency, accountability, and a genuine desire to build a welcoming, dynamic environment where members can thrive both on and off the field.

Looking ahead, I am eager to continue contributing to the TPAAA’s growth and evolution. By leveraging my experience and passion for sport, I aim to help develop innovative programs, strengthen member engagement, and preserve the rich legacy of our organization for years to come. I am dedicated to advancing the TPAAA’s mission and ensuring its ongoing success for future generations.

Jhoanna Harrison, Past President

Jhoanna Harrison is currently the Immediate Past President of the TPAAA Executive. Jhoanna was previously the site rep at headquarters since 2016. At the age of 8 years old, Jhoanna became a competitive figure skater, where she competed as a single skater at the provincial and national levels. She later competed at a national and international level as a Synchronized skater. Currently a member of Skate Canada and holds her NCCP level 2 coaching certification as a Professional Figure Skating and Powerskating coach.

Jhoanna is a serving member at Emergency Management and Public Order Unit on Project Resolute.  She is dedicated to promoting team cohesion and wellness through athletic engagement recognizing sport as a powerful tool for personal and mental heath wellness.
